David K. Israel of Gulfstream Pictures is set to adapt Elizabeth Kendall’s acclaimed book 'Balanchine & the Lost Muse: Revolution & the Making of a Choreographer' for a feature film detailing the life and works of the iconic choreographer, George Balanchine. Set against the backdrop of the Russian revolution, the film will tell the story of Balanchine during his tenure at Mariinsky Theater, where he met his muse, Leda Ivanova. The Gulfstream Pictures partners Mike Karz and Bill Bindley will produce the film.
As one of the most celebrated choreographers for ballet in the twentieth century, it is clear the film telling Balanchine's story in this way will be highly praised. Despite the political turmoil surrounding Balanchine - and the mysterious disappearance of Ivanova - Balanchine went on to recreate modern ballet as it is known today, with so many of his works still performed widely. The majority of Balanchine's work took place in America however the film will also recreate his life before his journey to the US.
Zippora Karz, as one of the last dancers selected by Balanchine for New York City Ballet, will act as executive producer on the film. Karz went on to become a soloist under Balanchine and now handles the George Balanchine Trust in staging his choreography around the world. There are strict regulations to abide by in order to stage Balanchine's work, and that is if permission is granted.
Balanchine’s early life was full of passion but also tragedy, and telling his untold story will delight fans everywhere. Israel is more than man enough for the job, having previously worked for Leonard Bernstein’s estate, particularly helping to edit and publish West Side Story. He has written music and libretto for ballets commissioned by Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp, and he is currently developing one-hour dramas for television.
