Dancing Makes Me Feel…

Word Cloud - International Dance Day Survey

In celebration of International Dance Day, we asked 500 members of the British public, aged 18-34, to complete the sentence “Dancing makes me feel…”

Here are the top 10 responses:
  • Good / Great (27%)
  • Happy (23%)
  • Alive (4.8%)
  • Free / Liberated (3.4%)
  • Silly (2%)
  • Stupid (1.8%)
  • Awkward (1.6%)
  • Better (1.6%)
  • Sad (1.4%)
  • Embarrassed (1.2%)

The question was asked to a cross-section of the public, with a 50/50 male/female split – rather than surveying dancers specifically, we wanted to know what feelings the average Joe and Josephine associate with dancing.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with more than half of respondents choosing words like ‘good’, ‘happy’, ‘alive’ and ‘free’.

However, it’s clear that dancing isn’t always everyone’s cup of tea, with some people admitting it makes them feel ‘stupid’, ‘awkward’ or ‘embarrassed’.

When we broke down the data based on gender, it was clear that the awkwardness was more of an issue for men than women, suggesting that there is still a clear cultural gap when it comes to how men feel about dancing compared to women.

Men Women Some of the more creative responses that didn’t make it into the top 10 included: ‘Like a superstar’ ‘Like I ain’t got no rhythm’ ‘Like I’m in another galaxy’ ‘Like a boss’ ‘A bit silly’ And simply… ‘woo’.
