Dancing wonders

Stacey MacNaught |

Dancers can often be viewed as wonders or illusions of the stage, able to make their bodies do things other humans could only dream of doing. Whether it is standing on their heads, contorting themselves into a pretzel or high kicking across the stage, it is true that dancers' discipline and control of their bodies is something to be admired.

Despite this 'otherworldly creature' view, others may see dancers as those with odd habits and somewhat crazy abilities, rather than admiring these. Naturally there are general misconceptions about dancers. For example, it might thought that dancers are naturally flexible, blessed with the natural capacity to touch their toes or split all three ways. However many dancers have to work at their flexibility in order to both improve and maintain it. This is just one demonstration of the way dancers strive towards their goals.

For some onlookers, dance may appear to be just a hobby and something to enjoy in addition to school, college or work. Whilst this may be the case for some dancers, sometimes the ultimate goal is to become a professional dancer, paid to do what they love. Many may not be able to comprehend this ambition, yet it is just the same as aiming to be a professional swimmer or project manager. At an extension of this, the intelligence of dancers can be underestimated because the majority of their time is not spent at a desk. On the contrary dance requires intelligence as well as physical fitness.

Many other misconceptions could include the idea that dancers are all tiny creatures, and female dancers could never lift males due to their strength and size. The dance world changes so rapidly, as do trends and cultures in the everyday world, so anything really is possible.
