Gypsy's revival
One of the greatest of all Broadway musicals is set to burst onto the new Chichester Festival Theatre stage this autumn - Sweeney Todd director Jonathan Kent and iconic actress Imelda Staunton will reunite for the glittering spectacular Gypsy, the musical adored by so many musical theatre audiences all over the world. Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and featuring classics such as Let Me Entertain You, Everything's Coming Up Roses and Rose’s Turn, Gypsy is both incredibly moving and brilliantly entertaining.

Two-time Olivier Award winner Staunton will star as stage mother Rose in the revival. She has previously played Mrs Lovett in the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, which ran at the Adelphi Theatre. Staunton is best known for her film and TV work including Up the Garden Path, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and her Oscar-nominated turn in Vera Drake. She received Olivier Awards for The Corn is Green and Into the Woods, as well as for Sweeney Todd. Her other stage credits include Guys and Dolls, Mack & Mabel, Elektra and A Man for All Seasons.
Arguable by many, this fabulous show is one of the crowning achievements of musical theatre today for the twenty-first century, with Mama Rose a truly legendary role. The character of Mama Rose has been been performed by several icons of the stage, including Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters. This major UK revival of Gypsy is the first since its West End run in 1973, telling the story of how Rose Hovick (or Mama Rose, as she is best known) helps to turn her daughter, Louise Hovick, into the burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee.
