Kinky Boots announcements

Stacey MacNaught |

indexThe Broadway hit musical Kinky Boots will be winging its way to London's West End in the autumn, set to take the capital by storm. Casting has since been announced for the West End premiere of the screen-to-stage musical, which will open at the Adelphi Theatre in September. Matt Henry will star as drag queen Lola, the role created on screen by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Henry, who recently appeared in The Voice, has West End credits including The Lion King and Avenue Q. He'll be joined by Killian Donnelly, currently starring alongside Beverley Knight in Memphis the musical, as Charlie. This announcement is made even more significant following a recent joint interview with Donnelly and Knight, in which they both lamented the future prospect of leaving Memphis, claiming the musical was one of the best things to happen to the West End. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EoXr07bmAs Kinky Boots is a tale adapted from the 2006 Brit flick about a drag queen who helps an ailing shoe company design a new line of heeled footwear. It features songs by pop star Cyndi Lauper, a book by Harvey Fierstein and direction/choreography by the iconic Jerry Mitchell, who is also responsible for choreography such as that featured in the iconic musical Hairspray. With so many new musicals opening throughout London's West End it is no wonder that musical theatre stars are jumping ship to pastures new. Meanwhile, legendary star Ruthie Henshall has recently announced - seemingly unprovoked - she will be staying as part of the cast of Billy Elliot in which she plays Billy's dance teacher, Mrs Wilkinson. Ultimately the roles musical theatre creates - all over the world, not just in the West End - are just jobs, however the essence of the work and passion behind it is due to a pure love of the discipline. Kinky Boots opens at the Adelphi on 21 August 2015 ahead of press night on 15 September, with booking having opened on 2 March.
