The current Olivier awards are a far cry from the first ceremony held on a cold wintry
Sunday back in December 1976 and featured just 12 awards. Since 2012, the ceremony has been held at the wonderful Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. There are now 27 categories, 21 for theatre, two for opera, two for dance, one for productions presented by Society Of London Theatre Affiliate members and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award. The Society of London Theatre also present the Special Award.
