Sadler's Wells' Sampled
Sadler’s Wells' programme Sampled is a unique, once-a-year event which takes place at the London theatre from 29-30 January for 2016. In championing dance and all its aspects, Sadler’s Wells will kick off the new year with the return of its dance taster festival, featuring world-class dance and a series of workshops and foyer activities. The festival gives audiences a chance to experience the broad range of dance presented at Sadler’s Wells at once, offering a snapshot of its diversity of work.
Sampled features a wide variety of dance genres, from classical ballet to hip hop, contemporary and tango. The festival has been a regular feature of the theatre's yearly programme since 2007, also enabling audiences to participate in many beginners’ workshops, in styles such as ballet, contemporary, street dance, flamenco and contemporary ballet. The workshops will be taken by dancers such as Company Wayne McGregor, Birdgang Dance Company, New Adventures & Re:Bourne and English National Ballet’s Youth Company.
The 2016 festival includes exciting dance work from a variety of dancing talents. BBC Young Dancer winner Connor Scott and finalist Vidya Patel, winner of the South Asian Category, will appear in Sampled: Scott was crowned the winner on the inaugural event in May 2015 live on BBC Two at Sadler’s Wells, after being judged by a panel of top names in dance. World Champion b-boy crew The Ruggeds will return to the theatre from the Netherlands with a piece of work which received its world premiere at Breakin’ Convention in 2015. The company returns for the 13th Breakin’ Convention festival and UK tour later in 2016.
More well-known companies also form part of the line up. Hailing from Québec, The 7 Fingers (Les 7 Doigts de la Main) will appear in Sampled as one of the world’s most inventive contemporary circus companies. The piece will see eight artists free themselves from both internal and physical obstacles. The Sadler’s Wells Resident Company, Company Wayne McGregor, will be performing a piece which was seen at Sadler’s Wells in 2014 as part of the second in its Composer Series. Completing the bill is the Countryside pas de deux, an extract from Northern Ballet’s 1984. Based on George Orwell’s masterpiece, it is created by guest choreographer and former Royal Ballet dancer Jonathan Watkins.
