Sister Act - a new touring production
The frank and revered Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood is set to direct and choreograph a new touring production of the musical Sister Act. While extensive touring dates and casting is yet to be announced, Horwood’s production, which will be produced by Jamie Wilson, opens at the Curve theatre in Leicester on 30 July 2016. It is currently booking until 17 December, when it plays at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge.
The hilarious show is both wonderful and full of drama simultaneously. Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier - played by Whoopi Goldberg in the film - a disco diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a murder. Under protective custody she is hidden in a convent, a place she is most unlikely to be found. Disguised as a nun and under the watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices in a wonderful tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music.
Featuring original music, dazzling choreography and songs inspired by Motown, soul and disco, Sister Act is a delight from start to finish as one of the funniest musicals around. The new touring production will have music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner. The additional book material is by Douglas Carter Beane.
As a Broadway and West End smash hit musical comedy, Sister Act's return to the UK follows its opening in the West End at the London Palladium in June 2009. The show closed in October 2010 and a UK tour commenced, starring Cynthia Erivo, in 2011. The brand new production directed and choreographed by Horwood is sure to be a new delight for fans of both the musical and the film.
