Having fallen in love with ballet at the age of 10, Precious Adams has been dancing ever since. Precious has been dancing with the English National Ballet for over 5 years. We caught up with her at our latest photoshoot about her life as a professional ballerina with one of the world’s leading dance companies.
What’s your current level within the company and what does this involve?
I’m a First Artist with is like a corphyee. But at ENB you can get opportunities and dance any different level of a role.
How long is your working day and what does it consist of?
When we are in a rehearsal phase we work from 10.15am until 6.30pm and they can be really different. Sometimes we’ll have no breaks and other times many breaks depending on if we are rehearsing something that we know or creating something new with a choreographer.
Then when we have performances, we usually work from 11.30am until the end of the show with breaks and time for meals and maintenance work. We always have class at the start of the day, 6 days a week.
Which has been your favourite professional role since September 2018?
This past year my favourite role was Chosen One in Pina Bausch Right of Spring and stepsister, Edwina in Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella in the Round at Royal Albert Hall.
What do you love about dancing with the ENB?
I love the diversity of work we perform. We do everything from neo classical to contemporary to pure ballet. There is something for everyone.
Who inspires you most as a dancer?
My colleagues inspire me every day. I’m inspired by the idea of becoming a symbol that expands people’s idea of who a ballerina is and what a creative athlete is capable of.
