Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts is launching a new course in writing musicals, which the drama school claims is the first of its kind in the UK. The course is set to launch in September of this year, and will offer students “practical training and experience in the art of writing musicals”, a so far niche market. It will focus on the craft and skill of writing and composing shows, as well as on how to get work developed and produced.
This hands-on course appears both appealing and relevant. It is no secret that there are not enough acting jobs for the numerous graduates which emerge from drama schools across the country every year, so by providing a new direction, it may develop a new avenue for many performers. Equally, offering this course for individuals who first and foremost wish to go down this creative route is to be commended, offering support and a strong basis on which to launch their career.

The course will be led by writer and lyricist Jenifer Toksvig, alongside writer and composer Rob Hartmann. The course will also feature input from a collaborative team of professional musical theatre writers from the UK and the USA, which will mean the course's first students will be privy to a multitude of talent to learn and develop in accordance with. In addition, students on the course will be able to collaborate with writers and composers from the musical writing programme at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
It is clear Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts is committed to helping talented individuals achieve their goals of working creatively in the arts industry by providing the very highest standard of vocational training. It has also emerged that from September, students on the Mountview postgraduate diploma course in musical direction will be able to take this to a masters level by completing a dissertation.
