New York City Ballet debut for National Ballet of Canada
For a male in his early twenties, the compliments don't come higher in the dance world, than a choreographic debut with New York City Ballet. Robert Binet, a Choreographic Associate with The National Ballet of Canada, recently made his complete choreographic debut at New York City Ballet. Binet was appointed Choreographic Associate at The National Ballet of Canada in 2013.
The new work, The Blue of Distance, premiered at NYCB’s annual Fall Gala on 30 September at the David H. Koch Theater at New York’s Lincoln Center. The piece is set to two movements from Maurice Ravel’s Miroirs – OiseauxTristes and Une Barque sur l’Ocean, with designs by Hanako Maeda of Adeam.
In a celebration of new choreography, ballet and fashion, NYCB’s Fall Gala will also feature new works by choreographers Justin Peck, Troy Schumacher and Myles Thatcher, and is co-chaired by Sarah Jessica Parker. In what looked set to be a keystone evening in the future of ballet, particularly for New York City Ballet, Binet is anticipated to be a monumental success in the future.
Binet, as a native of Toronto, received his training at Canada’s National Ballet School. For The National Ballet of Canada he has already created three works, with one set to an original score for the company’s Innovation programme. He also created five works for the company’s YOU dance programme, Choreographic Workshops and The Eleventh International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize.
Prior to joining the company as a Choreographic Associate, Binet was the first Choreographic Apprentice at The Royal Ballet where he was mentored by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor. In 2011, he shadowed John Neumeier through the creation of a new ballet and created a work for The Hamburg Ballet’s junior company, in addition to creating works for the New York Choreographic Institute, Dutch National Ballet’s Junior Company, the Estonian National Ballet, Ballet Black and the Genée International Ballet Competition.
